A recent study found traces of contaminants in water systems in Santa Monica that are known to cause cancer, hormonal disruption, pregnancy problems, damage to the brain and nervous system, and a range of other serious health issues. The Study

The study was done by a nonprofit organization called Environmental Working Group. In collaboration with outside scientists, researchers were able to aggregate and analyze data from nearly 50,000 local water utilities in all 50 states.

The problem with legally allowed contaminants in water, in general, is that many of these legal limits are outdated and not entirely safe for consumption. According to the environmental group, many of the 270+ contaminants detected in the study are at levels that recent studies have found to pose potential health risks but are nevertheless deemed legal under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.

According to Sydney Evans, a science analyst from the study, it’s important for new regulations to come in place to protect public health. But, in the meantime, people need to be aware of the tap water they are drinking and focus on improving its quality.

The study found that Santa Monica tap water contains a total of 27 contaminants, ten of which exceed the Environmental Working Group’s health guidelines. Some of the most dangerous contaminants that are linked to cancer and were found in tap water include:

• 1,4-Dioxane
• Arsenic
• Bromodichloromethane
• Bromoform
• Chromium (hexavalent)
• Dibromochloromethane
• Nitrate
• Total trihalomethanes (TTHMs)
• Uranium
